Successful Start to the 2026 Season for the Weltklasse Zürich Extrameile in Zurich and Zug

The Weltklasse Zürich Extrameile has successfully launched its 2026 season. With two vibrant final events in Zurich and Zug, nearly 3500 schoolchildren from 200 school classes took part in the season opener. At the same time, the launch marks the beginning of the largest Weltklasse Zürich Extrameile season since the project was founded: a total of nine final events will take place across German-speaking Switzerland in 2026.
The season kicked off with a “home game” at the historic Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich. Usually home to international athletics stars, the stadium gave students the opportunity to experience its unique atmosphere while completing their personal Extrameile over 1,609 meters. For many children, the day became an unforgettable experience on one of Switzerland’s most iconic sporting stages.
With the second final event held at the modern OYM Hall in Zug, the Weltklasse Zürich Extrameile continued its tour together with a strong regional partner. The world-class infrastructure provided ideal conditions for an active and varied day filled with sporting challenges, group activities, and positive movement experiences.
At the heart of the Weltklasse Zürich Extrameile is the playful promotion of physical activity and endurance skills among children and young people. The project gets school classes moving, creates sustainable motivation for exercise, and encourages enthusiasm for an active lifestyle. Community, motivation, and shared experiences are at the center of the initiative.
The 2026 season marks a new dimension for the Weltklasse Zürich Extrameile. With a total of nine final events, the project will reach more regions than ever before, further strengthening its position as one of the leading school and physical activity initiatives in the Swiss sports calendar. Its broad regional presence enables school classes throughout German-speaking Switzerland to enjoy sustainable and emotionally engaging movement experiences.
The event in Zug is made possible thanks to close collaboration with strong regional partners from the worlds of sport and society. Together with EV Zug and the OYM Hall, a high-quality and memorable activity event was created, offering participating school classes unique insights into a modern sports environment. The Weltklasse Zürich Extrameile is also supported by Swiss Athletics as well as cantonal and local partner organizations, all of which are jointly committed to promoting sustainable physical activity in schools.
Following the successful season opener in Zurich and Zug, the next events are already approaching. In the coming weeks, the Weltklasse Zürich Extrameile will stop in Bern and Lucerne, followed by further editions in Basel, Davos, St. Gallen, and Rapperswil. The diversity of venues — ranging from large stadium settings and urban experience locations to extraordinary natural and leisure environments — gives each final event its own distinctive character and makes the Weltklasse Zürich Extrameile a unique movement initiative throughout Switzerland.
