INGEBRIGTSEN BREAKS CHERUIYOT'S WINNING STREAK
Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen was the first to accept the breathtaking pace suggested by the pacemaker. He passed the 400m mark in 1:51, hinting at a fast result. The Norwegian running wunderkind, and one of three fast brothers, ran a powerful race, clocking 3:29.02 – another world leading performance. After winning four consecutive Wanda Diamond League final races, Timothy Cheuriyot (KEN) had to congratulate his opponent on the trophy this time around.
The women’s race was an entirely different affair: Faith Kipyegon (KEN) and her colleagues were unwilling to follow the pacemaker, seeking a fast finish instead. In the final metres, Olympic and world champion Kipyegon indeed kept the upper hand and crossed the finish line just in front of Ciara Mageean. The Irish, an 800m specialist, still managed to confirm her 1500m skills after her surprise win in Brussels, in which she had improved her personal best by more than five seconds.

FAITH KIPYEGON: MOTHER OF A YOUNG CHILD AND DETERMINED TO WIN
The race’s line-up is as good as it gets. It includes all world championship medallists, who are also the three fastest athletes this year: Faith Kipyegon (28) from Kenya, Gudaf Tsegay (25) from Ethiopia and Scotland’s Laura Muir (29). Double Olympic champion and two-time world champion Kipyegon, mother to four-year-old Alyn, is determined to win. Four weeks ago, she missed the world record by a mere three tenths of a second in Monaco. Tonight, she is hoping that pacemakers will be going out fast from the start. 5000m world champion Gudaf Tsegay is back on the track already, after competing in the 5000m on Sechseläutenplatz yesterday.
CAN ANYBODY STOP INGEBRIGTSEN?
The youngest member of “Team Ingebrigtsen” is already outrunning his brothers Henrik and Filip. And he is out to claim his first Diamond Troph. Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who is turning 22 in two weeks is the 2022 European champion both in the 1500m and the 5000m, and nearly a double world champion, too (after coming in “just” second in the 1500m). In order to win a Diamond Trophy, he will have to dethrone five-time Wanda Diamond League champion Timothy Cheruiyot (26). The Kenyan star had claimed the world championship title in 2019, but was a runner-up – to the young Norwegian – at the 2021 Olympic Games.
