REPRESENTING AN ENTIRE NATION
Despite her young age, Yaroslava Mahuchikh is the hope of an entire war-stricken nation. The Ukrainian had come in second at the world championships in Eugene. Now, she claimed her very first Diamond Trophy by clearing 2.03m. More important for her and her fellow Ukrainian friend Iryna Gerashchenko, who place second (1.94m), may be that they can convey some positive energy in such difficult days.

A DIAMOND FOR THE UKRAINIAN PEOPLE
Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh was disappointed when she won silver at the world championships in Eugene. She would have loved to win gold for the war-stricken people in Ukraine. Maybe, she can win a diamond instead. Mahuchikh had won her first world championship silver medal at the age of 18. In 2021, she claimed Olympic bronze. This year, she started out by winning at the world indoor championships and went on to claim the European title. In Brussels, she cleared 2.05m – a world best performance. In 11 days, the former hurdler turns 21.
Tonight, her strongest opponent may be fellow Ukrainian Yuliya Gerashchenko (27, 4th in Eugene).
