14 Swiss stars chasing Diamond glory on home soil
At Weltklasse Zürich they have always set the crowd alight – the Swiss athletes who, on Wednesday and Thursday, will perform in front of sold-out stands and an electric home audience. Five will be in action on Sechseläutenplatz, competing for the Diamond Trophy, while nine more will line up in the main programme at the Letzigrund Stadium.
Swiss athletes have already stepped onto the Wanda Diamond League podium ten times in 2025. With Rome champion Jason Joseph (110m hurdles), European indoor champion Ditaji Kambundji (100m hurdles), European champion Angelica Moser (pole vault), European U23 champion Audrey Werro (800m), as well as multi event aces Annik Kälin and Simon Ehammer (long jump), no fewer than six Weltklasse Zürich ambassadors will be in the hunt for the prestigious Diamond – all of them with roots in the UBS Kids Cup.
Nine Swiss athletes in the stadium main programme
Audrey Werro, the 21-year-old Swiss record holder and current world No. 2 over 800m, once ran here as a youth talent in the MILLE GRUYÈRE pre-event. Now she returns to the big stage, chasing her first Diamond Trophy.
Together with Werro, no fewer than nine Swiss athletes have earned a place in the Letzigrund main programme – four by direct qualification and five via National Wildcard, which the host meeting may award to homegrown talents who meet the performance criteria.
For the latter, it is less about podium places and more about seizing the chance to shine on athletics’ biggest stage, spurred on by the roars of their home fans. World University champions Joceline Wind and Simon Wieland, for example, are both eyeing major personal milestones – the 4:00 barrier over 1500m and the 80-metre mark in the javelin.
In addition, four Swiss men will compete over 400m and four Swiss women over 400m hurdles in the pre-programme.
Five Swiss athletes on Sechseläutenplatz
Simon Ehammer already has a Diamond Trophy to his name: the 2023 Final winner in Eugene (USA) and a man with more than 60 jumps beyond eight metres. Yet in Zürich, he is still chasing that magic leap past the 8m mark. Could the unique atmosphere on Sechseläutenplatz inspire him to deliver it at his home meeting?
Joining him will be his TV Teufen clubmate Miryam Mazenauer and thrower Stefan Wieland from Berne, both Swiss No. 1s this season and both making their Wanda Diamond League debut in the shot put. Also stepping onto this stage for the first time is Basel pole vaulter Lea Bachmann.
By contrast, her discipline colleague Angelica Moser is already battle-tested: fifth at last year’s Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels, the LC Zürich athlete is determined to claim her first home-meeting podium after top-three finishes this summer in both Stockholm and London.
